It’s ok to pave your own road.
Whilst juggling two jobs, full-time uni and an internship (I don’t recommend doing all these things at once), I’ve had the opportunity to experience the communication industry and launch my career.
Despite how hectic my life has become, I’ve noticed my choices have led me to drift apart from those who I was once close with. I scroll through countless posts on my phone and see many of them embarking on new and exciting journeys together, wondering whether I’m falling behind and should be keeping pace with their lives.
With the people in my life defining their careers, embarking on new relationships and developing their own goals, I’ve come to a crossroad: Where do I go? What path do I want to take?
Expectations within all aspects of our lives are rising, and sometimes it seems as if we’re pulled into different directions of who we should be in contrast to who we want to be.
This impedes on a big decision we all must make: do we take the road others expect us to take, or do we follow our own set of rules and expectations?
Over this past year, however, I’ve learned some important lessons which have reassured me of who I am (although it’s a work in progress) and what I wish to pursue. And in the spirit of our Career Hacks … I’m going to share them with you!
1 // Have the confidence to pursue your decisions and define your successes.
As easy as this sounds, it takes a lot of bravery and determination to do (it’s scary as hell). For me, trusting myself and blocking out everyone else’s opinions has been primal in understanding exactly what path I choose to go down. Venturing away from decisions others expect you to pursue can be scary; it takes a lot of courage to get up and do something different.
2 // It’s not supposed to be easy.
If you thought this was going to be a walk in the park, then you couldn’t be more wrong. Taking the first big step into the big, bad world can be isolating. In fact, it can be terrifying and sh*tty at the same time!
Always remember your goals and why you’re pursuing them in the first place (this took me like a solid 10 years or so to figure out). What motivates you? Why are you doing what you’re doing? Ask yourself these things daily. It can help you decide what it important to you in your own life. It also helps when you have people in your life who support you and your decisions. They will be your biggest support network and can guide you to what decisions would be best for you.
3 // Remind yourself of who you are and what you desire.
Even if you don’t know who you are or what you want sometimes (Exhibit A: Me), it’s good to notice what you enjoy, what your vision is and what you’re capable of. It’s these things which will make you realise everyone else’s opinions and expectations don’t matter. The only person that really matters is you, so unapologetically be yourself!
Everyone will travel their own journey, and yours will be different. And that is completely and utterly fine, trust me. It’s your story, successes and decisions that will make you who you are. Write it. Be the author. I mean what the hell, hit them with a plot twist!
If this was easy, then wouldn’t it just be all the less worthwhile?
Go on, pave your own road. Who knows, maybe everyone else will wish they did what you did. Whatever decisions you make, I promise you that you won’t regret it.
